Ask Questions!

Today my daughter had a wellness check with her pediatrician. My wife and I before the appointment made sure to think about any questions we had about her and her well being. When the doctor came in and asked if we had any questions, it seemed like our minds went blank. We couldn't think of any right off the top. After he did his routine exam, the questions luckily came back. How many of us do this? We always ask tons of questions to the cell phone salesman or our server at the restaurant but we don't ask questions to our healthcare providers. We need to! We need to take control of our health and ask questions. Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare provider. Develop a relationship with your pharmacist as you would your doctor. Together you, your Physician, and your Pharmacist can improve your health.

This video is a funny portrayal of how Healthcare Providers feel.

Here is a list of simple questions to ask:

What is this test for?
How many times have you done this procedure before?
When will I see results?
Why do I need this treatment?
Are there any alternatives?
What are the possible complications?
What drug are you prescribing me?
Are there any side effects?
How will this medicine interact with my other medications?

Why are men sporting Moustaches this month?

Is it Tom Selleck Appreciation Month? No, its MOVEMBER.  Movember has taken over from the old November as a month to raise funds and increase awareness of men's health. Here are a few stats on men's health:

1 out of 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime
1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer
A man dies from prostate cancer every 15.6 minutes
97% of prostate cancer occurs in men age 50 years old or older
Prostate cancer is 90% curable- if detected and treated in its early stages

Just as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, November is for Men's Health. Next time if you see a moustache in the month of November, think Movember and Men's health. Check out the Movember Website to donate or for more info.

Best Pharmacy 2011

Did you know that Consumer Reports and J.D Power & Associates also rank pharmacies? So who won for 2011? Check out this link for Consumer Reports press release and this link for J.D Power & associates concerning who was ranked 1st and the characteristics of those who won. Ill give you one characteristic of the pharmacies that were ranked #1, the pharmacists were easy to talk to and able to give the patients one on one consultation. Do you go to a pharmacy where your pharmacist "hides" and only will come out if you have a question or do you go to a pharmacy where your Pharmacist is there at the cash register asking you what questions they can answer for you? You have the choice on Pharmacy! Pharmacists are more knowledgeable about medications than Doctors are and much more accessible so go to a pharmacy that knows you and takes care of you. The Best Pharmacies of 2011 were those who have Pharmacists who care about their patients by taking the time to talk to them about their medications.

Drug Patches Should be Disposed of Properly

Did anyone see the article on MSNBC about drug patches and their proper disposal? here is the link to it. Its a very interesting article talking about the need for safety when disposing of prescription patches. 22 million prescriptions for patches were sold in 2010, with about a quarter of them written for the pain medication, Fentanyl. One boy was taken to the hospital after his grandparents found him barely breathing. The ER Dr's found a 50 mcg per hour patch stuck to the roof of his mouth. The boy survived after being quickly treated with an opioid antidote. Patches are becoming very popular vehicles for drug companies to use to release the drug. Proper disposal of patches is the way to prevent these exposures to children. Below is a list of solutions.

1) Fold the Patch in half, so no drug can be released if the patch is touched
2) Dont cut the patch into smaller pieces. This could expose the person cutting the patch
3) Keep all patches, new or old, in a safe location away from children
4) Old patches should be put in child proof container. (a sharps container would work great)
5) Some Patches can be flushed, others shouldn't be. Check with your pharmacist
6) Patches remain powerful, even after use
7) If swimming, showering, or playing sports make sure patch is still attached
8) Exchange patches one for one. This allows a record keeping of where all patches all

How to Choose a Pharmacy

Recently I've been looking for a car to purchase, and I've realized that there are many features to consider when choosing the right vehicle. The same is true when choosing the right pharmacy. A few "features" instantly come to mind: Will the pharmacy accept my insurance plan? How are the prices? Is the location okay for me? What hours is the pharmacy open? In addition to these criteria, I would add some other important things to think about: What level of service will I receive? Does my pharmacy have what I need? Do I have a relationship with my pharmacist?

The pharmacy staff should be helpful and willing to serve you at all times. Make sure that your pharmacist is available to talk to you and answer your questions. Remember, the pharmacist plays an important role in your healthcare team, so make sure that you trust him or her. By going to the same pharmacy each time you need medication, you will begin to establish a relationship with your pharmacist, and by filling prescriptions at one location you will help to prevent medication interactions, too. Some pharmacies may offer special services such as free delivery, medication consults, blister packing, or compounding (when prescibed by your clinician, a compounding pharmacy can make "tailor-made" prescriptions just for you).

Consider each of these questions, and make sure that you find a pharmacy that meets all of your needs!

Insomnia

We have all experienced difficulty sleeping at one point or another in our lives. It is normal to sleep less as we age. Insomnia is only considered to be a problem if it interferes with your life. If you are sleeping less now than you did when you were younger but don’t feel tired during the day, there is no need to worry. There are different types of insomnia. Some people have trouble falling asleep while others may have trouble staying asleep. Insomnia can last days or weeks, or it can be chronic lasting for several months or more. The best way to handle trouble sleeping is to make sure that you are practicing good sleep hygiene.

Sleep hygiene includes simple things you can do to get a better night‘s sleep. Changing certain behaviors can also help improve the quality of your sleep. Just a few things you can do to get a better night’s sleep include:

• Develop a regular bedtime routine
• Don't use the bedroom for daytime activities
• Don't go to bed thinking about stressful matters
• Go to bed at the same time every night, even on weekends
• Keep the bedroom dark, quiet, and cool
• Use relaxation techniques before bed (such as reading a book)
• Drink warm milk or have a warm bath before bed
• Minimize taking medications that may affect sleep (ask your doctor or pharmacist)
• Avoid eating a large meal before bedtime
• Avoid watching the clock

If you find that sleep behavior changes are not enough, medication may be appropriate for you. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before using prescription or non-prescription medications. There are non-prescription products available that contain sedative antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine which can be used as a sleep aid but, these may cause drowsiness the following day. Your doctor may also prescribe a sleep medication if non-medication approaches haven't helped. These medications are not a cure and may even worsen insomnia when you stop taking them. Some anti-depressants have also been used to treat insomnia. Anti-depressants such as trazodone, amitriptyline, and doxepin taken at bedtime can help you fall asleep. The main classes of medications used to treat insomnia are the benzodiazepines (such as Restoril, Halcion, and Ativan) and non-benzodiazepine sedatives (such as Ambien, Lunesta, and Rozerem). To the right you will find coupons for Lunesta and Rozerem. There is also a coupon for Ambien CR which is a controlled release formulation of Ambien that helps you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. If sleep behavior changes haven’t worked for you, ask your doctor which medication would work best for you. Since sleep is so precious, these medications can be expensive. Take advantage of the coupons because every little bit helps. Certainly, there’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep.

Sinus Rinse

This is the best product!. I recommend everyone who comes in to the pharmacy complaining of any nasal irritation to use this rinse. Most things you are allergic to are blooming now. This product rinses your sinuses of the "junk." Not only of the allergen, but also of the junk protecting the allergen. Think about it. You will rinse your nose with mild pressure and remove the both the gunk and the small irritant. Then when your sinuses are clear you use a nasal spray. Fluticasone is the cheapest yet requires a prescription. Yet when used it works better, than no rinse at all. The drug actually gets to the place it needs to really work. It penetrates deeper and gives better results. I am a believer. I have used it and ALWAYS use it when I am stuffed up. Go to your local pharmacy and get one now. Use this link for a coupon from NeilMed.

Prescription Drug Manufacturers offer Free Gifts

We have all seen it, someone standing at the pharmacy counter wanting to fill a prescription and the pharmacy states the price to the patient. We try not to look; We try to be sympathetic, we bow our heads trying to ignore the situation. Sadly the patient states, "I cannot afford that. Why is it so much? Is there any help?" The Pharmacist shrugs and says "Sorry." Awkward silence begins and you can nearly hear the patient think for a few minutes. Then the patient disappears back into the store.

Each and every day money is left on the table that manufacturers are giving away as "GIFTS". What exactly is a gift? A gift is something given with no thought of repayment. A gift is a choice. A gift is goodwill. With a little effort drug manufacturers are offering each of us a gift.

Make your computer hum, and type in whatever drug you have a prescription for .com or therxcoupons.com and click on your prescription drug. Gifts are available ranging from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars. For example a specific antihistamine nasal spray offers a printable coupon valued up to $100, or a minimum co-payment of $15.00.

The gifts offered from these drug manufacturers are for Brand name prescription drugs only. Unfortunately they are usually higher priced cash prescriptions. Utilizing the gifts given the prices can be reduced to what a generic prescription drug would be.

Use the Gifts. If your prescriptions are too costly, talk to your pharmacist about available programs. If the pharmacist is unable or heaven forbid not willing, find another pharmacist. Fill your prescriptions at a pharmacy that takes care of you and your wallet.
